Official information request regarding tutor and teaching assistant pay rates
I refer to your request for further information under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act) dated 26 August 2022:
1)
“Is the School of Psychology the only School with such a pay structure?
2)
If not, what are the pay structures at the other Schools?
For Schools without a pay structure, where pay is individually negotiated:
3)
For the last trimester, what is the average hourly pay for a Tutor and what
is it for a TA? The hourly rates should be in the electronic timesheet system.”
In order to answer questions 1 and 2 we would need to examine the arrangements of each
of the University’s schools to identify any particular pay structures are used and whether
they are similar to that used in the School of Psychology. As the University has 27
separate schools it is estimated this process will take at least nine hours of time (at an
estimate of 20 minutes per school). Given the amount of resource required to process
your request, we have decided to charge for making the requested information available.
We estimate that the maximum charge for this request will be $684. Any unused
component of the maximum charge will be refunded to you.
Please note, provision of pay data for schools with less than five tutors or teaching
assistants may result in the pay rates of individuals being identified. As such, any
information collated in regard to pay structures of schools with less than five tutors or
teaching assistants will be withheld in accordance with s9(2)(a) of the Act in order to
protect the privacy of natural persons.
Before we proceed further with your request, please confirm your agreement to the
charge and pay the full amount. The payment can be deposited in to the following account
with reference ‘
Torven Schalk OIA request’:
ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited

Victoria University of Wellington
Once you have paid the charge please email
[VUW request email] confirming the time
and date on which the payment was made. Upon confirmation of payment, we will collate
the information and provide it to you.
We are able to provide the average pay rate for tutors and teaching assistants in each
school as at 29 August 2022 without needing to charge. This information is attached.
Please note, this information in the attachment only relates to tutors and teaching
assistants who are paid on an hourly basis and does not include consideration of those
who are paid via salary.
As above, provision of pay data for schools with less than five tutors or teaching assistants
may result in the pay rates of individuals being identified. As such, in these instances the
information is withheld in accordance with s9(2)(a) of the Act in order to protect the
privacy of natural persons.
