Official Information Act request: Collection of COVID-19 related fines

Thank you for your email of 17 July 2022 requesting, under the Of icial Information Act
1982 (the Act), information regarding the collection of COVID-19 related fines. Specifically,
you requested:

1. Where the fines have not been collected by Worksafe and the infringement has
been transferred to you, please share  the budget spent to date on court

appearances and legal costs for these fine collection to date.

2. Please share the budget allocated for this financial year for using the courts to

attempt to collect these fines.

The Ministry of Justice (the Ministry) does not maintain a separate register of costs
relating to specific court actions in relation to the collection of fines or reparations. The
Ministry does not therefore hold data on costs for collections actions (including any court
events) relating to Worksafe fines where the infringement has been transferred to the
Ministry, nor is there any specific allocated budget for any of these costs.

Therefore, I am refusing your request under section 18(e) of the Act on the grounds that
the information you have requested does not exist.

If you are not satisfied with my response, you have the right to complain to the
Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email
at [email address].
