Official Information Act request regarding solar flares 
 
Thank you for your request made under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), received 
on 30 June 2022. You requested: 
 
“I was wondering how protected the NZ grid is against a sustained X class+ solar flare. 
Does NZ have a response plan in place for something like that?”. 
 
I believe that the information you have requested is more closely connected with the functions 
of  the  Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment.  Accordingly, I have decided under 
section 14(b)(i ) of the Act to transfer your request to the Ministry of Business, Innovation & 
Employment for response.
