Thank you for your request dated 2 June 2022 to the Department of Corrections – Ara
Poutama Aotearoa, inquiring about Corrections’ information management policy and use of
Google Analytics. Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(OIA).
On 4 July 2022, you were advised that Corrections extended the due date of our response to
you pursuant to section 15A(1)(b) of the OIA.
You requested:
I note on your website https://www.corrections.govt.nz you are using Google
Tag Manager and Google Analytics to record details of visits to your website.
Can you please provide the following:
1) The length of time this Google Analytics data is retained for.
2) A copy of the Information Management policy that this data retention period is
based upon.
Corrections uses Google Analytics 3 to collect and report information. The information is
retained for 26 months which is one of the default Google Analytics 3 options. This is not
covered by Corrections’ Disposal Schedule. However, it is aligned with Archives NZ General
Disposal Schedule GDA6.

Due to the upcoming retirement of Google Analytics 3, Corrections signed up for Google
Analytics 4 in May 2021. The data collected through Google Analytics 4 is currently not
being used to report information. The data is retained for 14 months, which is the maximum
Google Analytics 4 option.
