[FYI request #19317 email]
Dear Oscar
Request for information
I refer to your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 11 May 2022 in
which you requested the following:
I request the following information for the past 5 year period.
1. The number of theft, burglary and robbery reports.
2. How many resulted in someone being charged for the above
crimes.
3. How many received the generic response below where no action
was taken.
"Thank you for reporting your case to the Police on 01/01/2021.
After looking at all the available evidence we have not been able
to find out who is responsible. Unless more information or
evidence is found, we can’t proceed any further with this case..."
4. Any statistics the police hold on the number of theft, burglary and
robbery related crimes that are not reported.
Police proactively publishes statistics which are updated monthly. These statistics
can be viewed and downloaded online from policedata.nz.
The ‘Victimisations (demographics)’ report from these statistics wil  be the most
useful for questions 1 to 3. You can access this data by the following steps:
• Go to policedata.nz and double click on the ‘Victimisations
(demographics)’ report
• From the ‘Victimisations (demographics)’ report, select the tab labelled
‘Trends’
• Select the time period you require by using the filters ‘Start Date’ and ‘End
Date’
• You wil  find from the ‘Crime Type (selected period)’ chart of the report:
- Robbery, Extortion and Related Offences
- Unlawful Entry With Intent/Burglary, Break and Enter
- Theft and Related Offences

• To expand the categories to show the ANZSOC Group, click on the icon
that has ‘square with a + in it’ over the ‘ANZSOC Division’ heading.
• The ‘Outcome of Investigations (selected period)’ chart show the
breakdown where the investigation is based on the number of days it has
been reported to police (7,30,90, 180 days). It is indicated under the
‘Outcome of Investigation’ dropdown menu.
• Select/highlight a specific crime type and the ‘Outcome of Investigations
(selected period)’ chart automatically updates to show breakdowns.
• Finally, you can download detailed information about these data using the
download icon at the bottom of the page and selecting ‘Data’.
Police does not produce statistics relating to the generic response mentioned in
question 3. The information that you have sought would have to be extracted
from individual Police records and for statistics to be created in order to fulfil this
response. This requires Police to undertake significant collation and research to
understand this information. The OIA does not require agencies to create
information for the purposes of answering requests, therefore this part of your
request is refused under section 18(f) of the OIA.
In answer to question 4, Police only produces statistics on crimes that are
reported or otherwise come to Police attention. Therefore, this part of your
request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA as such information is not held.
However, the Ministry of Justice produces the New Zealand Crime Victim Survey
which may interest you.
Please note that as part of its commitment to openness and transparency, Police
proactively releases some information and documents that may be of interest to
the public. Therefore an anonymised version of this response may be publicly
released on the New Zealand Police website.
I trust this information is sufficient for your purposes. If you have any questions
regarding this data, please feel free to contact me via [email address].
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not
satisfied with Police’s response to your request. Information about how to make a
complaint is available at: www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
Yours sincerely
