Official information request
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 8 February 2022 seeking
the following information from the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS).
1. A copy of the NZSIS Data Strategy 2020
2. Copies of all email communications between Director Kitteridge or the NZSIS Knowledge
Manager and
a. Chief Science Advisor Juliet Gerrard;
b. Government Chief Data Steward Mark Sowden or
c. Data Ethics Advisory Group Chair Dr Nessa Lynch;
d. on the topic of data ethics since the beginning of 2019.
On 7 March 2022 you were advised of an extension to the time limit for responding to this
request, to 18 March 2022, due to the consultations necessary to make a decision. Thank
you for your patience while we prepared a response to your request.
A copy of the NZSIS Data Strategy is enclosed. Some information has been withheld under
section 6(a) of the OIA, to protect the security or defence of New Zealand or the international
relations of the New Zealand government.
A copy of the requested email communications between myself and Mark Sowden are
enclosed. Some information has been withheld under section 6(a) of the OIA.
There were no additional emails in-scope of your request. As such, I must refuse your
request for all other email communications under s18(e) of the OIA, as the information you
requested does not exist or despite reasonable efforts to locate it, cannot be found.
