[FYI request #14773 email]
Dear Mr Cleveland
Thank you for your email of 25 February 2021 to Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities requesting
the following information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Can you please advise how many empty homes that are currently managed by Kainga Ora in
Petone, Lower Hutt and Moera, Lower Hutt (and whether they are 1 brm, 2 brm and so on)?
I can advise that as at 15 March 2021 there were 20 vacant houses in Petone and nine vacant houses
in Moera. The table below provides a breakdown of these properties by suburb and number of
bedrooms.

At any point in time Kāinga Ora has properties that are vacant between the end of one tenancy and
the start of another. During this short time the property is inspected to ensure there is no damage and
to allow any maintenance work to be done before a new tenant moves in. Properties may be vacant
for a longer period of time, due to redevelopment, methamphetamine contamination, or because they
are undergoing major repairs or upgrades.
Kāinga Ora publishes updated statistics on its website every quarter on the number of houses it
manages and the number of properties that are vacant. The most recent statistics are from December
2020. The figures are listed by Territorial Local Authority, including Lower Hutt, but are not broken
down by suburb.
Yours sincerely
