OIA request 20/21 0452 Request for deprivation statistics 
Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal 
Affairs (Department) on 17 February 2021.      
You requested, in relation to the Citizenship Act 1977 –  
•  How many times in the last five years has the Minister deprived a New Zealand citizen of 
their citizenship under s16 of the Act 
•  How many times in the last five years has the Minister deprived a New Zealand citizen of 
their citizenship under s17 of the Act 
You have also stipulated in your request that you would like the information broken down by 
year. 
I can confirm the information requested up until 2019 is available online at www.dia.govt.nz. 
You can locate the data by entering ‘citizenship statistics’ into the search bar up the top right of 
the page, then by selecting the link ‘Citizenship Statistics – dia.govt.nz’ and scrolling down to the 
bottom of the page. 
I note the 2020 data is not currently available online however is expected to be published within 
the next two months. 
Your request is therefore refused pursuant to section 18(d) of the Act; that the information 
requested is or will soon be publicly available. 
I also note the data online does not specify which section the citizenship was deprived under 
however, I can confirm these were all under section 17 of the Citizenship Act 1977.
