Dear Caleb,
Official information request for information about the Callaghan Innovation IP programme.
I refer to your official information request dated 22 December 2020 for the fol owing information:
1. Further to Cal aghan’s response to OIA request 2016-OIA-15, FYI request #4135, hyperlink as fol ows, in
which the fol owing information was provided up to 14 July 2016: “A list of al the businesses that have
received support as part of Innovation IP since inception (split out per provider if possible).” Please
provide a summary of the total number of businesses that have received financial support as part of
the Innovation IP programme since 14 July 2016, split out by programme provider.
2. Please provide a list of businesses, individuals or other entities that have received grants from
Cal aghan Innovation, whether directly or through the Regional Business Partner Network.
3. Please advise whether recipients of grants from Cal aghan Innovation are required, requested or
otherwise recommended to participate in the Innovation IP programme.
4. Please advise whether the Innovation IP Programme is promoted by Business Innovation Advisers
and/or R&D Advisers at Cal aghan Innovation, or its Regional Partners.
5. Please advise what proportion of recipients of grants from Cal aghan Innovation received financial
support as part of the Innovation IP program.
6. Please advise whether any grants by Cal aghan Innovation are awarded on the condition that there
is participation in the Innovation IP programme.
7. Please advise whether applicants for grants given by Cal aghan Innovation have been required or
encouraged to seek advice on “freedom to operate” or other intel ectual property issues other than
by participating in an Innovation IP workshop.

I.e., they have enrol ed and wil be eligible to receive the financial support, on completion of Stage 1.
2. Please provide a list of businesses, individuals or other entities that have received grants from Cal aghan
Innovation, whether directly or through the Regional Business Partner Network.

This information is available on our website, using the “Grant Recipients” search function:

(1982) (“the Act”), as it is already publicly available.
3. Please advise whether recipients of grants from Cal aghan Innovation are required, requested or otherwise
recommended to participate in the Innovation IP programme.
Response:
No, Cal aghan Innovation grant recipients are not required or requested to participate in the Innovation IP
Programme.
Some grant customers may have the programme recommended to them, if it is believed they would benefit.
This would be at the discretion of the Primary Relationship Manager (Regional Business Partner, Customer
Manager or Business Innovation Advisor).
4. Please advise whether the Innovation IP Programme is promoted by
Business Innovation Advisers and/or
R&D Advisers at Cal aghan Innovation, or its Regional Partners.
Response:
The programme can be recommended by Business Advisors and Regional Partners and/or other primary
relationship managers to those customers where they see the right fit, they do not “promote” in a typical

sales fashion. However, participation in the programme is entirely voluntary, and is up to the customer to
decide whether or not to use the service.
5. Please advise what proportion of recipients of grants from Cal aghan Innovation received financial support
as part of the Innovation IP program
Response:
Approximately 5% of Cal aghan Innovation grant recipients have also received financial support via
subsidised attendance of the Innovation IP Programme. Note this proportion is limited to the past 5 years
only (since 01/01/2016) .
6. Please advise whether any grants by Cal aghan Innovation are awarded on the condition that there is
participation in the Innovation IP programme.
Response: No, Cal aghan Innovation never awards grants on the condition that the recipient participate in the Innovation
IP Programme.
7. Please advise whether applicants for grants given by Cal aghan Innovation have been required or
encouraged to seek advice on “freedom to operate” or other intel ectual property issues other than by
participating in an Innovation IP workshop
Response:
Yes, some grant recipients have been approved on the condition that they complete a Freedom to Operate
search. This is in cases where we believe the technology being developed may already be in existence, or if
we do not believe the company has investigated in sufficient depth.
We do not put any conditions on who should undertake that search - other than that it be an appropriate
professional.
