Your Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-007690
Thank you for your request of 6 November 2020, asking for the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
1. Total number ACC claims related to fireworks.
2. Total cost per claim in question #1
For the purpose of this OIA can you give data for accidents that happened from 1st November 2020
through to 9th November 2020
Data we are providing
The data set available to ACC is reliant on the information provided on ACC45 claim lodgement forms.
We have extracted data based on the ‘accident description’ field on these forms. This field is not
mandatory to complete and not every client does so. Also, when the field is completed there is
considerable variation in the way accidents are described.
Due to the limitations above, while largely representative of the firework-related claims received by
ACC, the data should not be considered a complete, definitive measure of the claims for firework-
related accidents that ACC received during the period covered by this response.
Number of new claims and costs for fireworks related injuries for the period of 1-9 November 2020
Number of new claims
Costs to date ($)
Average Claim Cost ($)
44
$8,132
$185
In addition, 41 claims were treated in the emergency departments of public hospitals. We do not have
the costs for these claims as it is provided through a bulk payment from ACC to the Crown, and not
assigned to individual claims.
Notes about the data
• New claims have been counted by the date that the claim was registered with ACC. This can be
immediately after the injury occurred or at any later stage.
• Costs exclude GST and are based on payment date, which may be differ to the date of service.
• Accredited employer claims have been excluded.
• The data was extracted on 25 November 2020 and may differ if rerun at a later date.
