The data presented in this snapshot for Courtenay Place and
surrounds is for the area indicated within the red line.
It extends along Courtenay Place from Cambridge Terrace
through to Taranaki Street (including Blair and Allen Streets),
then along Dixon Street to lower Cuba Street.

Wellington, in addition to Te Aro Park. A further breakdown

CCTV & Local Host city safety incidents
These are the daily totals of city safety incidents, for
Courtenay Place and surrounds for the month of November.

These incidents are from two sources: WCC's CCTV operators
and Local Host teams.
There is a strong level of week day activity.
This graph breaks down the total number of these city safety
incidents into types.
The most common type of incident was
Rough sleeping,
followed by
Anti-social behaviour, and
Begging.

This graph shows the total monthly city safety incidents that
have been recorded for Courtenay Place and surrounds since
1 January 2019.
The overall trend was down prior to a trough during
lockdown in April 2020. Since then the trend is upward.

There is a stark contrast between the number of incidents
logged in January 2019 compared to January 2020 - however
incidents are trending upward as noted above.
It will be interesting to see if the data for January continues
this trend, given the sudden decline in November.
In November 2020, there was an increase in policing in this
area associated with the launch of the Police's Mahi Ngātahi.
Data Collection Note: The local host team had higher levels of
staffing in the first part of 2019. Full-time CCTV operators
commenced in September 2020.

Te Aro Park area
Here's a further breakdown of city safety incidents in the Te
Aro Park area, indicated by a yellow line.
This is more focussed area within the Courtenay Place and
surrounds and includes Te Aro Park, sections of Dixon and
Manners streets, Lower Cuba Street, Opera House Lane and
Lukes Lane. This list of locations are interconnected i.e. what

happens in one place impacts on the others due to factors
such as proximity and pedestrian flows.

By far the most common type of incident recorded in this area
is rough sleeping.

Place precinct as a whole.

centre for November, 22 of these occurred in Courtenay Place
and surrounds (depicted in blue).

9 out of these 22 enquires related to community safety
(highlighted in yellow).
City Safety enquiries include any issues of concern in relation
to community safety, such as street lighting and CCTV.
Graffiti Coordinator enquiries are usually reports of graffiti
that have been seen by the public, but which falls outside of

the scope of Wellington City Council’s graffiti removal
contract and are therefore not sent to our removal
contractors to action.
Street Outreach enquiries include enquiries about
homelessness (rough sleeping) and begging.
