Thank you for your request which was received by the Ministry of Health on 10 October and later
transferred to Capital & Coast (CCDHB) and Hutt Valley (HVDHB) District Health Boards on 19
October 2020. You requested:
1.
What is the maximum bed occupancy in ICU (intensive care units) across all hospitals in New
Zealand, in total.
2.
What has been the bed occupancy rate (% of beds occupied in ICUs) by week / month (which
ever time period data is available) across the same hospitals in question 1 above, for the
period 15 March 2020 to 1 October 2020.

Question 1
What is the maximum bed occupancy in ICU (intensive care units) across all hospitals in New Zealand, in
total.
Response
Wellington Regional Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has a current total of 21 resourced beds.
Question 2
What has been the bed occupancy rate (% of beds occupied in ICUs) by week / month (which ever time period
data is available) across the same hospitals in question 1 above, for the period 15 March 2020 to 1 October
2020. Response
The table below summarises the average number of patients located in the Intensive Care Unit at Wellington
Regional Hospital at midnight by week between 15th March 2020 and 1st October 2020.
