Dear Tara,
Official Information request - AEC applications from 2017 and 2018
I am responding on behalf of the University, to your recent OIA request. The information you have requested is
as follows:
“I would like to request a copy of the approved application(s) made to your Animal Ethics Committee
on the following uses of animals:

a.
30 cats used for medical research in 2017
b.
8 cats used for the production of biological agents in 2017
c.
4 rabbits used in a study to develop a surgically induced model of bladder dysfunction in 2018
d.
Any animals imported to be used for RTT purposes in 2018
The relevant protocols are attached and relate to the above requests: (a) 15/35, (b) 17/19, (c) 16/127 and (d)
16/90.
I understand from our Ethics team that you may be specifically interested in six horses which were purportedly
imported into New Zealand by Massey, as was cited in our 2018 return to MPI.  However, I am advised that
upon researching those statistics, it was found that this was a keying error in the database and the animals
were actually obtained from public in-country sources, not imported.
I trust this is the information you require, please let me know if you have any queries.
Yours faithfully,
Jodie Banner
