Dear Tim
Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Conservation,
received on 27 August 2020 in which you asked:
What information you hold on Mount Pukepohatu, (aka Baldrock) On Baldrock road in
Kaiwaka. As to why the top was blasted with dynamite?
And is there record of the supposed rock paintings that were found by local farmers?
Also do any archeologic records for it exist at all?
Your questions and our responses are listed below:
1.
What information do you hold on Mount Pukepohatu?
The Department does not hold any information on Mount Pukepohatu. An investigation
into your inquiry has shown that Mount Pukepohatu is not on Public Conservation Land.
2.
Why was the top blasted with dynamite?
The Department has no knowledge of any blasting occurring at Mount Pukepohatu.
However, a portion of this area was surveyed possibly for a lease as a quarry in around
1947 but it does appear that the summit was not included in this survey.
3.
Is there record of the supposed rock paintings that were found by local farmers?
Our inquiries show no mention or record of any rock art in this area.
4.
Are there any archaeological records for it that exist at all?
Our investigation shows no archaeological records for this site.
Yours sincerely
