Thank you for your requests of 30 March, 13 April and 20 April 2020, for TeachNZ scholarship award 
data. 
We have considered your requests under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).  Your original 
questions and my responses to them are listed below.  
When you read this information, it is important to note: 
•
The information being released to you is drawn from the total number of applications for TeachNZ
support received by the Ministry, and does not refer to individual applicants unless otherwise
stated.
•
Candidates make their own decisions about gender, cultural and ethnic identity and affiliation.
The data being released to you is drawn from the responses provided at the discretion of the
candidates themselves.
•
The total number of applications or scholarships across a given time period may be higher than
in the gender breakdowns in this response, as the breakdowns do not capture nil responses or
answers other than male or female.
•
Applicants  have  the  option  to  list  their  age  as  unknown.  For  this  reason,  any  breakdown  of
applications by age wil  also be lower than the total number of applicants.
•
No ECE scholarships were run in 1999; and
•
2020 data is drawn from applications for the two completed rounds conducted so far this year,
and not the totality of applications received since 1 January 2020.

Of those female ECE students who were awarded scholarships in 2020, how many are Maori? 
There have been two TeachNZ scholarship rounds in 2020 to date. From these rounds, scholarships 
were awarded to five male students, none of whom identified as Māori. In the same time period, 
scholarships were awarded to 34 female students, 18 of whom identified as Māori.

As at 2019, there are currently 348 unqualified male ECE teachers and 510 qualified male ECE 
teachers. 
•  How many of those male ECE teachers are Maori? 
•  How many of those Maori male ECE teachers are qualified and how many are unqualified? 
As at June 2019, there were 95 Māori male early childhood educators. 50 were qualified, and 45 were 
unqualified.     
In 2019, two Maori male ECE student teachers were awarded an ECE TeachNZ scholarship. What 
Teach NZ scholarship did each receive? and 
In five or six years just one male student 2015-2020 over the age 50 has been awarded an ECE 
TeachNZ scholarship. What was that scholarship? What was the student's ethnicity? 
Both recipients received the ECE scholarship, which is no longer offered. One recipient received an 
undergraduate scholarship. The other student was a man aged over 50 who identified as Māori. He 
received a graduate-stream ECE scholarship.  
Please note, these numbers are correct only within the context of the provision of TeachNZ scholarships, 
and are not a proxy for the demographic makeup of the wider early childhood education sector. 
Since 2015, thirteen scholarships have been awarded to Maori male ECE teachers. How many 
ECE Teach NZ scholarship applications were received 2015-2020 in total? 
•  How many applicants were female and how many scholarships were awarded to females? 
•  How many applicants were male and how many scholarships were awarded to males 
In this time period, we received 726 applications. Of the 678 applicants who identified as female, 299 
were successful. 
38 applicants identified as male, 21 of whom were successful. 17 of the male candidates identified as 
Māori, 13 of whom were successful. 
In the last 20 years and four months (Jan 1999 to Jan-April 2020) 
•  How many females have applied for an ECE Teach NZ scholarship? 
•  How many females have been awarded an ECE Teach NZ scholarship? 
•  How many Maori males have applied for an ECE Teach NZ scholarship? 
•  How many Maori males have been awarded an ECE Teach NZ scholarship? 
In the rounds completed between January 1999 and April 2020, there were 10,112 applications from 
female candidates, of whom 6,787 were successful. 
We also received 335 applications from male candidates, of whom 217 were successful. 92 of the male 
candidates identified as Māori, 67 of whom were successful.
