[FYI request #12069 email]
Dear Mr Baw
I refer to your email dated 23 January 2020 in which you requested information about
compensation payments made by Police over the past five years. You have specifically
requested:
“I understand that the Los Angeles Police pay-out over $100mil ion per annum in legal pay-
outs. I'm interested in the comparable figure for NZ Police. Can you please provide me with
the amount paid out by police annually for each of the last five years in legal pay-outs. This
should include both pay-outs ordered by the court or other agencies (such as the HRRT)
and payments agreed to avoid legal action”.
I have considered your request in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982.
Police Legal Services are the budget holder for civil litigation and compensation claims
made against Police and the information that we hold with regards to your request is set
out in the table below.
Financial Year
Cost
2014/15
$888,803.96
2015/16
$905,181.84
2016/17
$398,785.33
2017/18
$ 786,691.58
2018/19
$ 809,895.00
From time to time the various Police districts will make compensation payments, out of
their own separate budgets, for issues such as minor damage to property or belongings.
Police Legal Services are not routinely notified of these payments, so this table doesn’t
capture everything that may have been paid.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied
with the way that I have responded to your request.
Yours sincerely
Ian Bradshaw
