Official information request for grade distribution statistics for the School of
Engineering & Computer Science
I refer to your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act)
dated 20 November 2019:
“I would like to request a grade distribution break down by course (paper) for all
2019 trimester 1 and trimester 2 papers run by the Faculty of Engineering and
Computer Science.
By grade distribution breakdown I mean for each paper you would detail how
many people got each grade for each paper (e.g for COMP102 there was 1A+ 2A
3A-.... etc).”
On 21 November 2019 you emailed the University to extend your request:
“I would like to clarify that I also wish to include the full year ECS papers as well
(e.g. ENGR489) in addition to the previously requested trimester 1 and 2
courses.”
Attached is the grade distribution for all courses taught in the 2019 academic year in the
School of Engineering and Computer Science. Please note, the grades of some courses
taught are yet to be finalised. These grades appear in the attachment as “pending”. Some
courses are also listed as “Directed Individual Study”. These courses are not a single
course that students do as a single cohort, like others. More information can be found
about these courses on the University’s website.
The University has decided to withhold all grade information for classes with less than
five students under section 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act 1982. The release of
this information would pose a significant risk to the privacy of said students, and their
achievement within their respective courses. The University believes there is no
countervailing public interest outweighing the students right to privacy.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of the
University’s decision to withhold this information. Information about how to make a
