Dear Mr Thompson
RE: OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT REQUEST – 19-E-0772
Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Conservation,
dated 8 November 2019.
You requested the following:
information of the latest statistics for visitor numbers to the
Remutaka Forest Park specifically into the Catchpool Valley via the entrance off the
Wainuiomata Coast Road. Could you please include: 1. The latest statistics on visitor
numbers in to the Catchpool Valley, Remutaka Forest Park; and, 2. Confirmation of the
year of the count and how the count was undertaken.
The Park has five counters installed in total, including car counter on the Catchpool Valley
Road.
Your questions and our responses are listed below:
1.
The latest statistics on visitor numbers in to the Catchpool Valley, Remutaka
Forest Park:
In the last full year that we have data for, there were 22,443 recorded counts of
vehicles travelling into and out of the Catchpool Valley. This is uncalibrated
counter data so the number of unique vehicles entering the Valley is likely to be
approximately half this number.
2. Confirmation of the year of the count and how the count was undertaken.
The data was collected for the last full year of 2017/18 and captured by an
induction loop car counter installed mid-way along the Catchpool Valley Road.
The Department also captures pedestrian access data on four of our tracks in the Valley
which helps us to determine visitor numbers on our tracks.
