Candace Miranda, now deleted response

Rich Seager made this Official Information request to Human Rights Commission

The request was successful.

From: Rich Seager

Dear Human Rights Commission,

please explain why on this OIA request of C. Montague's

https://fyi.org.nz/request/9720-emails-a...

How an email (now deleted) was added to this response by a 'Candace Miranda' with the beginning line "Would you be interested in API Management B2B Contact List?".

Were they copied in on the original OIA of C. Montague's or the responses to it?

If so why?

And what organization do they work for?

Yours faithfully,

Rich Seager

This has nothing to do with the Human Rights Commission. It was email spam, which appeared on FYI because it was sent to the email address dedicated to that request. It has been removed because it was spam.

The email address was presumably extracted by the spammer by reading it out of the response PDF document. This happens occasionally on FYI, when agencies include the email address for a request in their response.

I guess we can both agree that the response should not have made it on to FYI.org.nz and yours is one possible explanation for that.

I would have thought it more likely though that for some reason (mistake or not) that they were copied in to the email originally.

Regards
Rich

If you are a "long time listener" you will have seen, not all that infrequently, spam messages added to requests. They are often for requests that have been quiet for some time and often come in batches attached to unrelated queries.

I'm inclinded to agree with Mark.

There's one pdf with (probably) the relevant email quoted (I'm not going to test it).

So yes it's possible. Maybe I should amend to ask who else was notified of the request by HRC.

Thanks. I'll mull it over .

One more thing — I don't beleive it is possible for a govt dept to remove anything from this website. That is only something the fyi admins can do.

I assumed that to be the case.

HI FYI. The software should really block replies (with a reason why included) that include the @fyi email address from the respondents as this could be used maliciously.

Tēnā koe Rich,

I have check the original response that we sent for this request and there
is no reference to anyone named Candace Miranda or the wording "API
Management B2B".

I see there are some responses to your question suggesting it may be an
FYI glitch - I have CC'd in the FYI team to see if they may provide
further assistance.

Tēnā koe Jaimee,

yes it seems that the address that you email these responses to was included in a previous pdf from where somebody has lifted it.

I would suggest that fyi.org.nz blocks any reference to these email addresses in replies as it is (probably, I havn't tested it) a trivial exercise to pretend to be the respondent by using these email addresses.

I don't think that fyi.org.nz should strip these addresses as that itself is problematic but should bounce such replies back to the sender with advice on how to fix.

Ngā mihi

Just to clarify why I withdrew this request,

1. There was an email in one of the pdfs that likely could have been used to make the post to fyi.org.nz

2. There were search engine hits (not that many but enough) on a spammer by the name of Candace Miranda.

There's still a remote possibility that the inclusion of Candace Miranda was not accidental or of a spammer but to proceed on a remote possibility seems a little wasteful of everyone's time.
